Rosario + Vampire (Japanese: ロザリオとバンパイア Rozario to Banpaia) is an anime adeptation of a manga written, and illustrated by Akihisa Ikeda. The anime was produced by Gonzo, and directed by Takayuki Inagaki and originally aired in Japan from January 3, 2008, to March 27, 2008, on Tokyo MX, Chiba TV, and TV Kanagawa.
Overview[]
The series starts out with Tsukune Aono, an average teenager, is unable to get into any local high schools due to his poor grades. However, his parents are happy to have him enroll in a private school called Yokai Academy (which requires no entrance exam). When he arrives, he discovers that Yokai is in a remote location, and is actually a boarding school for monsters who are being taught how to coexist with humans, including disguising themselves as them, and that any real humans who discover its existence are to be killed. Tsukune fears for his life, but makes friends with a beautiful vampire girl Moka Akashiya, who gains an obsession for his blood. He later meets other monster girls who though usually starting out as antagonist, eventually take a romantic liking to him.
The name of the series is a reference to Moka Akashiva's means of suppressing her vampiric side; the use of Rosary and prayer - as Rosario is Spanish for prayer. Often her removing the cross around her neck is indication that she's about to do something aggressive. While focus is primarily on Moka's romantic or blood based interest in Tsukune her faith is a factor in why she didn't kill him. This aspect was mildly downplayed in the English dub.
