The Critic is an American animated TV show centered around a Critic in New York City.
The show follows the life of 36-year-old film critic from New York named Jay Prescott Sherman. His televised review show is called Coming Attractions, which airs on the Philips Broadcasting cable network. He is also "cold, mean-spirited, and elitist". His signature line, upon seeing a terrible movie, is "It stinks!" Each episode was full of film references and parodies. Some of the secondary characters that are a part of Jay's story include his nutty adoptive father, his well-meaning son Marty, the Australian movie star Jeremy Hawke, Margo — the biological child of his adoptive parents, his snide make-up lady Doris, and his boss Duke Phillips. In the second season, Jay acquired a love interest — a Southern woman named Alice Tompkins, who later became his long-term girlfriend.
The series originally aired 23 episodes between the 26th of January in the year 1994 till the 21st of May in the year 1995. The series again began production on the 1st of February in the year 2000 only to end production the next year. In that time an additional 10 episodes where added to the series.

While it began as a simple critique of the show the character of Jay would latter be present in The Simpsons, specifically episodes "A Star is Born", "A Hurricane Neddly", and "The Ziff Who Came to Dinner". In the first appearance he's hosting a film festival and interacts with the characters- chiefly critiquing what they are viewing, in the second he's in an Asylum and quite crazy, and in the third he is no logner in the Asylum and is present at the local tavern.
